Appreciate what you have, not what you haven't
It's very easy to get trapped in the 'glass half empty' cycle - especially when you've been through a major life-changer like separation and lose the ability to appreciate what you have. While it can be comforting to stay put at your own pity party with gin and tonic in hand, life's too short not to be happy, so here is the Happiness Institute's advice for being happy. They say you have to CHOOSE happiness, their acronym for:
• Clarity: of purpose, direction and goals. Focusing on what's really important.
• Healthy living: eat well, exercise and take time to reflect and meditate
• Optimism: think about yourself and the world around you in a helpful and constructive way
• Others: be kind, caring, compassionate and thoughtful to others
• Strengths: using your strengths to the best of your ability as often as possible
• Enjoy the moment: live in and enjoy the here and now. Practice gratitude and appreciation.
It won't happen overnight, but all you have to do is start. Many people find keeping a journal is a great way to keep focused on your goals, so write down CHOOSE and reflect on acts that day that you accomplished. It won't be long before you will appreciate what you have, not what you haven't.
